Drink driver stopped by members of the public

23 May 2025 6:46am

Motorists travelling on the Southern Expressway have rallied together to stop a drink driver after he nearly caused numerous crashes.

Just after 7.30pm on Thursday 22 May, police received multiple calls from members of the public advising there was a car swerving across Southern Expressway at O’Halloran Hill.

One driver travelling northbound in his Ford Ranger on the Expressway saw the Mitsubishi ASX swerving in and out of the middle lane and narrowly missing other vehicles.  He saw another vehicle pull in front of the Mitsubishi and slow down considerably causing it to stop.

Once the station wagon came to a stop the driver of the Ford Ranger got out of his car and ran to the Mitsubishi and turned off the car.  With the assistance of other drivers who had also stopped, they all moved the driver into the passenger seat and moved the vehicle into the emergency lane of the expressway and waited for police.

Patrols arrived on scene and breath tested the driver, who returned a positive result of 0.225.

The 31-year-old man from Morphett Vale was reported for drink driving and he will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

His Mitsubishi was impounded for 28 days and he was issued a 12-month immediate loss of licence.
