Driver charged after officer hit by car at Ucolta

A police officer was struck by a vehicle at Ucolta, in the State's mid north, this afternoon.

Police were attempting to stop a silver Holden SUV on the Barrier Highway, Ucolta at 3pm on Friday 29 March when it struck and injured a police officer.

The local Brevet Sergeant was taken to the Peterborough Hospital for medical treatment before being airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Thankfully, his injuries are not life-threatening.

The Holden SUV allegedly left the scene and was tracked by PolAir as it continued south on the Barrier Highway.

About 3.45pm, the suspect was safely taken into custody without further incident near the Barrier Highway, about 1.6 kilometres north of Hallett.

The 43-year-old Victorian man was arrested and charged with attempted murder, acts to endanger life, dangerous driving to escape police pursuit, leave the scene of an accident and other traffic offences.

He will be refused police bail and will appear in the Port Pirie Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Port Pirie CIB detectives are investigating this incident, with the assistance of Major Crash investigators who attended and examined the crash scene at Ucolta.

The arrested man’s vehicle was seized and towed for forensic examination.
