A safe and secure festive season!

Happy holidays from the Neighbourhood Watch SA team!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers involved with Neighbourhood Watch SA for their support, dedication, and commitment throughout the year to creating safe and connected communities all across South Australia.

The festive season is a special time of happiness and celebration, but it can also bring some risks and challenges. Whether you’re going away on holiday or staying at home, here are some tips to help you stay safe and secure during this holiday period.

Home security

Be vigilant about locking your doors and windows. Don’t display your Christmas presents or other valuables near windows where they can be seen from outside. Keep your garden maintained to eliminate hiding spots. Consider installing an alarm system, CCTV cameras and sensor lights.

Holiday safety

If you’re going away for the holidays, make sure your home is secure before you go. Leave a light on inside, or a car in the driveway to make it seem like someone’s at home. Ask a trusted friend or neighbour to collect your mail while you’re away.

Parcels and packaging

If you have parcels delivered don’t leave them out on your front porch where they could be stolen. When you unwrap your presents dispose of the packaging discretely, don’t let the whole neighbourhood know what you just got for Christmas.

Social media

Beware what you share on social media. Thieves can stalk social media sites to find out who has valuables worth stealing, and when you’re not at home. Keep your social media profiles private and be careful posting information about your holiday plans or expensive gifts you received for Christmas.

Scams

Be careful of holiday scams. From fake messages about parcel deliveries to online shopping scam websites, scammers are active during the holiday period. Don’t click on any links in emails or text messages you receive from people you don’t know, and don’t give out any personal information online.

Be alert

The holiday season can be a busy time with a lot of people out shopping for last minute Christmas gifts. It’s also a busy time for thieves looking for an easy score. Keep an eye on your valuables while you’re out shopping and don’t leave expensive gifts in your car.

Christmas decorations

Make sure your Christmas decorations and lights are safe, in good condition and not a fire hazard. If you have extension cords running through doors or windows, make sure they can still be locked securely.

Mental health

Christmas can be a stressful or lonely time for some, so make sure you look after your own mental health and check in on anyone in your life who may be feeling down. Together we can make our neighbourhoods and communities safer and more connected.

If you’re new to Neighbourhood Watch SA consider joining your local group, or think about starting a group in your area, and help make your community a safer and more connected place.

We wish you a safe and happy holidays!
