A young driver has lost his licence for a year after he was caught speeding in peak hour traffic this morning.

Just before 9am today (Thursday 10 September), police were conducting speed detection duties on Marion Road at Sturt when they detected a Volkswagen station wagon travelling at 116 km/h in a 60km/h zone.

The 23-year-old male driver from Victoria was reported for driving at an extreme speed, was issued a 12-month immediate loss of licence notice and his car was defected and impounded for 28 days.

He will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
