South district police remind of vehicle safety

15 Jul 2026 6:22pm

Police are reminding members of the public of the important to keep your vehicles locked.

Between May and June police have received numerous reports where vehicles have been targeted and tools stolen at locations across the southern suburbs.

Southern district police are investigating these reports and are urging members of the public to take extra precautions to protect valuables; including tools and equipment which are often targeted by opportunistic thieves.

Here are some simple steps to help prevent your car being broken into:

  • Remove tools from vehicles whenever possible, especially overnight.
  • If possible, park vehicles in a secure garage or well-lit area.
  • Install locks and/or vehicle alarms.
  • Ensure vehicles are always locked, even for short periods.
  • Consider marking or engraving equipment with your business name or drivers licence number. Marked items are less valuable to thieves.
  • Taking photographs of valuable tools and their serial numbers.
  • Avoid leaving tools and equipment visible inside vehicles.

Members of the community are encouraged to report any suspicious behaviour by calling the Police Assistance Line on 131 444, particularly around parked vehicles to aid in a prompt police response.
