Hunt for copper thief

Police are searching for a suspect after a large amount of copper cabling was removed from a Telstra pit in the northern suburbs early this morning.

Just after 1am on Monday 8 April, police were called to Innes Street at Elizabeth Park after reports a man was seen using a utility vehicle to removing copper cabling from a Telstra pit.

The white Holden Colorado ute was spotted by patrols a short time later on Adams Road at Elizabeth Downs with a large amount of copper cable dumped on the side of the road.  The car took off upon sighting police.

About half an hour later the same car was seen in a driveway on Midlow Road at Elizabeth Downs.  Northern District patrols cordoned the area and PolAir searched the area for the suspect however was unable to locate him.

Multiple tools used in the removal of the cabling were located near Adams Road.

Checks revealed the vehicle was stolen from a wrecking business at Smithfield on 18 March.

The car was towed from the scene and police are conducting positive lines of enquiry to locate the suspect.
