09 Apr 2024 4:09pm

A man has been charged after suspicious fires were lit at Bolivar this afternoon.

About 1.15pm emergency services were called to the North South Motorway after reports of a grass fire burning near the northbound off ramp.

When emergency services arrived they located the main fire along with two smaller fires burning about 200m south. Police conducted traffic management of northbound lanes on the Motorway while fire crews extinguished the fires. Approximately two hectares of scrub was burnt. Crime Scene Investigators attended the scene to gather evidence while police searched the area.

Police located a 56-year-old St Kilda man a short distance away and placed him under arrest. He has been charged with intentionally cause a bushfire, being unlawfully on premises and breach of bail. He is expected to be refused bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court tomorrow.
