Update: Second suspect in Welland murder arrested

19 Apr 2024 1:52pm

A second person has now been charged following a murder at Welland last week.

About 10am today (Friday 19 April) police attended a home in Elizabeth East and arrested a 51-year-old man. He was charged with murder and refused bail to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today.

Police will allege that between 12.50am on Wednesday 10 April the two offenders travelled from Elizabeth East to Welland travelling along Main North Road, Grand Junction Road, South Road, Grange Road, Welland Avenue to Musgrave Street, where the victim was killed.

Following the murder the two men travelled back along Welland Avenue, South Road, Port River Expressway, John Rice Avenue and Main North Road to Elizabeth East arriving about 1.50am.

Police are yet to find the murder weapon, believed to be a knife, and ask if anyone located a knife, blood-stained clothing or items of interest along the route to immediately contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

**To avoid the possibility of prejudicing any future trial Major Crime Detectives request the media not to publish any video or audio of the moments leading up William’s death.**

About 1.30am on Wednesday 10 April, emergency services were called to Barrpowell Street, Welland, after reports a man was found unresponsive on the roadway. Witnesses attempted to render assistance to the man, but sadly he died at the scene.

He has since been identified as 21-year-old Flinders Park man William Holdback.

Shortly before his death William had met with two occupants of a BMW sedan in Musgrave Street. A brief argument occurred and William fled into Barrpowell Street where he was fatally stabbed by the passenger of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle drove the BMW into Barrpowell Street and collected the person who stabbed William and they left the scene.

Detectives believe that the two suspects then travelled in the BMW north on South Road from Welland, then east along the Port River Expressway, along the full length of Salisbury Highway and into John Rice Avenue.

Police are appealing to anyone with dash-cam footage who may have been travelling on those roads between 1.15am and1.49 am to contact Crime Stoppers online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au or call 1800 333 000.

Late on Saturday 13 April, detectives attended a northern suburbs home and arrested a 27-year-old man, charging him with murder. He was refused bail and appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday 15 April.

The BMW was also seized from the home and the owner of the car interviewed. This 51-year-old man was arrested today (19 April) and charged.
