PSO Development Program 2 graduates ready to serve

The graduation marks the culmination of intensive training that has prepared the group to undertake operational roles supporting frontline police operations and protecting State Government buildings, assets and the community.

The cohort includes male and female members aged 19 to 42 who bring a range of life experience and employment backgrounds to the organisation, with industries including retail, corrections, payroll and skilled trades.

The group reflects the diversity of the South Australian community, with members originating from or having connections to countries including Brazil, India, New Zealand, Italy, Scotland, Romania and Serbia. One graduate relocated from Hatherleigh in regional South Australia to pursue a career with SAPOL.

Jedd, 22, said his previous experience as a retail supervisor helped him recognise the value of communication and conflict resolution skills in serving the community.

"This job helped me realise how good I was at conflict resolution and how I believed my skills could be used for the betterment of the community," he said.

Jedd said the opportunity to work with people, make a difference and enjoy a varied and secure career attracted him to the role.

"I love working with people and I have a high level of compassion. I thought these traits would work well within SAPOL," he said.

Returning to study after several years away from education proved one of the most challenging aspects of the course.

"I found it very difficult to get back into the study mindset and manage my time. However, later in the course this became easier as I learned what was expected of me," he said.

Jedd recalls some of the most memorable moments included active armed offender training and driver training.

"During driver training we were being assessed on our driving capability, but I found it more fun than stressful," he said.

Jesse, 19, said his experiences through school, sport and international travel helped shape the skills and values that prepared him for a career in policing.

"Competing internationally exposed me to different cultures, communities, and people from diverse background,” he said.

“It taught me the importance of teamwork, discipline, resilience, and communication.”

Throughout the program, recruits completed training across a range of operational disciplines and were challenged to develop resilience, professionalism and decision-making skills in realistic scenarios.

Jesse said the strong camaraderie within the course played a significant role in helping members succeed.

"Our academy course bonded as one by respecting one another and displaying our values. We supported each other through study, encouragement and teamwork.”

The graduates said the Academy experience challenged them to step outside their comfort zones while developing confidence, resilience and professional skills that will support them throughout their careers.

Reflecting on the program, Jedd encouraged prospective applicants to prepare for the study requirements and embrace the learning opportunities ahead.

"My advice would be to be prepared for the amount of study required and to adjust your expectations early to develop good study habits," he said.

Jesse encouraged those considering a career with SAPOL not to be deterred by uncertainty.

"Don't let concern or uncertainty hold you back before you've experienced it for yourself. Throughout this course, there will be situations that push you outside your comfort zone, but that is an important part of the role," he said.

Today's graduates will now move into operational postings across SAPOL, where they will support policing services and contribute to the safety and security of South Australians.
