Mortar found in Port Adelaide fireplace

Police were called to a property in St Vincent Street, Port Adelaide about 3.30pm on Monday 24 August after a person renovating the property discovered what appeared to be a small explosive device.

SAPOL’s Bomb Response Unit attended and assessed the item, which was then collected by the Australian Defence Force for disposal.

There were no injuries and no risk to the public.

While it’s not a common occurrence, SAPOL receive calls from members of the public who locate old explosives or dangerous substances.

These range from military items such as grenades, bombs, mortars and other items, to commercial or homemade explosives and explosive devices, ammunition and other hazardous materials.

If members of the public locate or wish to surrender any explosives or related materials, they should not touch them or bring them into a police station.  Instead, the public are asked to note the items appearance, take a photograph if safe to do so and call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
