Hundreds celebrate NAIDOC Week at Northern District community event

09 Jul 2026 6:00pm

Northern District police welcomed more than 500 community members to a free NAIDOC Week event at the Salisbury Community Hub today, celebrating this year’s theme, “50 Years of NAIDOC – The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.”

The annual community event brought together local families, Elders, young people and partner organisations for a day of connection, culture and celebration. Activities included a community sausage sizzle, youth giveaways and hand-painting artwork that highlighted the importance of unity and community.

The event was supported by the City of Salisbury, which provided the venue space, and Police Credit Union, whose volunteers cooked more than 250 sausages throughout the day.

A highlight of the event was an opening address from Mr Sonny Morey, a proud Arrernte man from the Northern Territory. Mr Morey shared his inspiring life story, reflecting on his experiences as a member of the Stolen Generation, his distinguished football career with Central District Football Club and the South Australian state squad, and his 13 years of service with SAPOL as a Community Constable.

Sergeant Jackie McDonald, Northern District Prime Prevention Supervisor, said the strong turnout reflected the importance of creating opportunities for communities to come together during NAIDOC Week.

“It was fantastic to see more than 500 people come together today to share in culture, connection and community spirit. The positive feedback from attendees highlights just how valuable these events are in bringing people together and building stronger relationships”, Sergeant McDonald said.
