Graduates committed to safety and security

Today, 23 Police Security Officers of Course 2 graduated at the South Australia Police (SAPOL) Academy, strengthening the service as part of the role’s ongoing transformation.

Tasks formerly conducted by police officers, including hospital and cell guard duties, are now being undertaken by Police Security Officers as part of a transition project.

Other responsibilities, including guarding crime scenes, school alarm responses, traffic cordons, event security and welfare checks are also among tasks previously earmarked for change.

Sixteen men and seven women, ranging in age from 19 to 44, are proud to graduate today, after journeying from a variety of employment backgrounds including retail, administration, fast food industry and paralegal work.

Police Security Officer graduate Cooper is bringing a love of sport and experience working in a major airline’s customer service section to the role.

“My new job as a Police Security Officer allows me to combine my love of teamwork gained from sports with keeping fit, which I am really excited about,” Cooper said.

“I’ve played baseball since I was five years old and started playing ice hockey in high school.

“The main reason I applied for SAPOL was to be in a job where I make a difference to other people’s lives, and this job allows me to do this.

“Police Security Officers get to do such a wide range of tasks, from school patrols to cell guard duties, with lots of other things in between.”

Cooper is grateful for friendships formed and memories made during his time at the academy, and has developed skills for life.

“Everyone on my course has been really supportive towards each other, and it really feels like everyone has each other’s backs, including the mentors and trainers,” he added.

“When someone’s struggling, we all get together and help them out where we can and there is always extra support when it is needed.”

Fellow Police Security Officer Brooke also shares a love of sport, particularly rugby, and working as part of a team.

After working mainly in an office environment, she was excited to throw herself into the academy and experience something “completely different”.

“My whole life I have wanted to help people and make a difference in my community. SAPOL also offers great job security and plenty of opportunities for promotion and leadership roles,” Brooke said.

“The role of a Police Security Officer is only growing, and I am excited to see where it may lead me.

“I hope to see myself in a leadership role one day, but I am more excited for the journey to get there.”

Brooke urged others interested in a diverse Police Security Officer career to give it a go, despite any trepidation.

“The academy is full of great, knowledgeable people who are there to help! There is always someone you can speak to that can help you develop or to break things down for you,” Brooke encouraged.

“SAPOL has plenty of resources which are there to help you succeed and enjoy the process. Being nervous isn't a bad thing; it just means it's important to you.

“All you need to do is see yourself in uniform and work your hardest to get there!”

SAPOL is currently recruiting for Police Security Officers and is keen to hear from people who are committed to contributing to the safety and security of the state.
