Explosives found in Elizabeth Park home

A man will face court after police allegedly discovered explosive materials at his Elizabeth Park address last night.

Police attended the Waytown Street, Elizabeth Park home and allegedly discovered various chemicals and cannabis plants throughout the property.

A further assessment of the chemicals identified volatile explosive materials and SAPOL’s Bomb Response Unit was requested to attend.

The occupant, a 55-year-old Elizabeth Park man, was arrested and charged with possess supplies for the manufacture of explosives, possess explosive instructions, cultivate cannabis and possess cannabis.

He did not apply for bail and is expected to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court later today.

Police secured the premises overnight and Bomb Response Unit will safely remove the explosives today.

Waytown Street was closed for several hours while emergency services processed the scene, however, reopened at 5.30pm.

The public is asked to stay away from the area until the matter is resolved.  There is no threat to neighbouring properties.

The investigation is ongoing.
