Celebrating NAIDOC with Ahmadiyya Muslim Community

10 Jul 2026 8:07am

South Australia Police officers from Western District attended a NAIDOC Week celebration at Mahmood Mosque in Beverley this NAIDOC week, recognising this year’s national theme, ‘50 Years of Deadly’.

The event brought together First Nations leaders, community representatives and faith groups to honour culture, connection and shared commitment to a safer, more inclusive South Australia.

SAPOL’s attendance followed an invitation from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, whose long‑standing motto, ‘Love for All, Hatred for None,’ shaped the evening’s focus on unity and respect.

Acting Assistant Commissioner David O’Donovan delivered remarks acknowledging the Kaurna people as Traditional Custodians and highlighting the importance of cross‑community partnerships in strengthening trust and safety.

“Tonight is a powerful example of what is possible when communities come together.

“Through respect, we build trust, and through partnership, we build stronger, safer communities,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Donovan said.

The program featured guest speakers including Senior Elder Hirima Tamihana, Uncle Iain Seymour, Lisa Purveen Khan, Hon. Mira El Dannawi MLC, Hon. Meagan Spencer MP and Mayor Angela Evans.

The event concluded with a NAIDOC Week award presentation and community dinner.

Western District officers regularly engage with the mosque as part of ongoing local community policing. Superintendent Joanne Sharman confirmed SAPOL’s support for sharing the positive engagement publicly.

SAPOL thanks the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community for its hospitality and for providing a meaningful opportunity to celebrate NAIDOC Week alongside First Nations leaders and community members.
