Today, South Australia Police (SAPOL) launch Operation River Safe, with more police and marine officers patrolling the River Murray as summer activity increases.
Police are urging river users to take a moment today to respect the river and revisit key safety steps:
Officer in Charge of the Murray Mallee Region, Superintendent Cindy Healey, said police will be highly visible across the river from today.
“Water Operations and Marine Safety Officers will be on the river patrolling for the next few months as people start to enjoy everything the river has to offer,” Superintendent Healey said.
“It is vital people are aware of the dangers when swimming, boating, or fishing and that they abide by all rules and regulations regarding the Harbors and Navigation Act and the Fisheries Act.
“Police have already noticed a number of boats without compliant life jackets, so check the rules, check your life jackets and perhaps give the gift of a new and compliant life jacket this Christmas.”
Marine Safety and Compliance Manager Gordon Panton said a well-fitted life jacket remains the most important piece of safety equipment on the water.
“Too often we see people underestimate the river because it looks calm on the surface. Respecting the river means recognising those hidden dangers and preparing for them,” Panton said.
“A life jacket isn’t just compliance; it’s your best defence against the unexpected.”
Operation River Safe will run throughout summer alongside the Respect the River – Make the Right Call campaign.
