Motorists urged to lock vehicles following spike in thefts

20 Aug 2026 2:17pm

Western District police are urging motorists to remain vigilant following an increase in thefts from motor vehicles across Adelaide's western suburbs.

Police have seen a rise in reports of thefts from motor vehicles in recent weeks, with offenders targeting vehicles parked in residential streets, driveways and public locations.

Recent incidents have occurred across a number of western suburbs, including Findon, Henley Beach, Kilkenny, Croydon Park, Prospect and Mansfield Park.

Western District police are actively investigating these incidents and are appealing to the community to report any suspicious behaviour around parked vehicles.

While responsibility for these offences lies solely with the offenders, police encourage vehicle owners to consider security measures that may help reduce opportunities for theft.

Police recommend:

  • Locking vehicle doors and closing windows when leaving a vehicle unattended.
  • Keeping wallets, handbags, mobile phones, cash, keys and other valuables out of sight.
  • Securing tools, laptops and other equipment when not in use.
  • Parking in well-lit areas where possible.
  • Reporting suspicious behaviour to police as soon as possible.

With tradespeople often carrying expensive equipment, police are also encouraging tradies to mark and record their tools. Recording serial numbers, photographing equipment and using unique identifying marks can assist investigators to identify and return stolen property if it is recovered. Where practical, tools should be stored securely when not in use.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity around parked vehicles is urged to contact police on 131 444.
