Driver flips car in Athelstone

A driver and his passenger have escaped injury after their car flipped and caught on fire in Athelstone.

Just before 1am on Monday 22 June police were called to Gorge Road at Athelstone after witnesses heard tyre screeching and reports of a vehicle collision.

MFS crews arrived  and located a Renault hatchback on its side after colliding with a median strip, tree and then into a light pole. The crash then caused a fire to the front end of the hatchback.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze, extensive damage was caused by the crash and the fire.

Police arrived and spoke with the driver, an 18-year-old man from Greenacres who held a P1 class drivers licence and was in breach of curfew conditions.

There were no reports of injuries to the 18-year-old driver or the 19-year-old passenger.

The driver was reported for breaching conditions and aggravated driving without due care. He will be summonsed to appear in the Magistrates Court at a later date.
