Southern District urges community to be vigilant

Vacant buildings, businesses that are closed, and premises under construction are often attractive targets for offenders seeking to commit theft, property damage, and other offences.

Under the cover of darkness, offenders can exploit these locations to gain unlawful entry, steal valuable items, and cause significant damage.

Construction sites and vacant commercial premises frequently contain tools, building materials, electrical components, plumbing supplies, and copper products, all of which can be quickly removed and sold for profit.

Southern District Police are encouraging the community to play an active role in preventing crime by reporting suspicious behaviour as it occurs.

"If you see a person or vehicle loitering around a vacant property, construction site or closed business and something doesn't seem right, trust your instincts and report it," Superintendent Luke Richards, Officer in Charge of Southern District said.

"Timely reports from members of the public often provide police with the opportunity to attend quickly, locate suspects and prevent offences before they occur."

When reporting suspicious activity, police ask that callers provide as much information as possible, including:

* Descriptions of people involved, including clothing and distinguishing features.

* Vehicle descriptions, including make, model, colour, and registration number.

* The location and direction of travel of any suspicious persons or vehicles.

* Any unusual behaviour or circumstances observed.

Members of the public should contact the Police Assistance Line on 131444 to report suspicious activity that is not an emergency. In an emergency, or if a crime is occurring at the time, call 000 immediately.

Police are also reminding business owners and property managers that simple security measures can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a target.

These include:

* Installing and maintaining CCTV systems that can be remotely monitored.

* Using audible and monitored alarm systems.

* Securing tools, equipment, and valuable materials.

* Removing items of value from vacant premises where possible.

* Ensuring adequate lighting, locks and perimeter security are in place.

"Crime prevention is a shared responsibility. The community are our eyes and ears, and information provided by the public is often critical in helping police investigate and solve offences."
