Limestone Coast Police have been busy on the roads during the long weekend with numerous drivers caught under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
About 5.15am on Friday 2 October, police were called to the Riddoch Highway at Joanna after reports that a driver was slumped over the steering wheel of a Ford station wagon. The vehicle was stationary however the engine was still running. Police spoke with a 21-year-old Naracoorte man who underwent a breath test and returned a positive reading of 0.129. Further checks revealed the driver was the holder of an international learner’s permit and the car was unregistered and uninsured. He was reported for drink driving, driving without a qualified supervising driver and driving unregistered and uninsured. He was issued with a six-month immediate loss of licence notice and his car was impounded for 28 days. He will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
About 6.10pm on Friday 2 October, a 60-year-old Worrolong man was stopped by police while driving on Jubilee Highway West in Mount Gambier. The man was found to have a suspended driver’s licence and he was reported for driving unlicenced. His vehicle was impounded for 28 days and he will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
About 11.35pm on Friday 2 October, a 26-year-old Joanna man was stopped by police while driving on Smith Street in Naracoorte. The driver underwent a breath test and returned a positive reading of 0.100. He was reported for drink-driving, he was issued with a six-month immediate loss of licence notice and he will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
About 3.50 pm on Saturday 3 October, a 36-year-old Naracoorte man was stopped by police while driving on the Riddoch Highway at Wandilo. The driver provided a positive drug test to cannabis and will receive an expiation notice and three-month immediate loss of licence notice.
About 10.55pm on Saturday 3 October, a 46-year-old Naracoorte man was stopped by police while driving on Arthur Street in Naracoorte. The driver provided a positive breath test reading of 0.314 – over six times the legal limit and was reported for drink-driving. He was issued with a 12-month immediate loss of licence notice and his car was impounded for 28 days. He will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
About 3.40pm on Sunday 4 October, a 47-year-old Mount Gambier woman was stopped by police while driving on Leumeah Street, Mount Gambier. The driver provided a positive drug test for methamphetamine and she also had a disqualified licence. The woman was arrested for drug-driving and driving while disqualified and was bailed to appear in court at a later date.
About 10.45am on Monday 5 October, a 53-year-old Mount Gambier man was stopped by police while driving on O’Leary Road, Suttontown. He provided a positive drug test to methamphetamine and will be reported for drug driving and issued with a three-month immediate loss of licence notice. He will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
Limestone Coast Police will continue to target drivers who ignore the road rules, along with regular patrols of roads in and around the region during the school holidays. Any incidents of dangerous driving or poor behaviour on the roads should be reported via the Police Assistance Line on 131444.
