What we do

The Neighbourhood Watch SA program is a community-led crime prevention initiative where volunteers and police work together to support towns and suburbs statewide to become safer and more connected.

Volunteer-run groups throughout South Australia, called Neighbourhood Watch Areas, work with police on crime prevention and community connection projects.

These range from information stalls at local shopping centres to raise awareness of safety and security issues, to graffiti removal programs and property engraving days.

Neighbourhood Watch Areas also hold community-building events such as barbecues and picnics because connected communities are often associated with reduced crime.

“If everyone looks out for a neighbour, you end up with a very strong Neighbourhood Watch community and that is good for the whole district” – George, Neighbourhood Watch Board Treasurer

Many Neighbourhood Watch Areas publish newsletters featuring crime prevention tips and information from police about local crime trends.

Crime trend information helps Neighbourhood Watch Areas align their work to provide the most benefit to the local community.

For example, a Neighbourhood Watch Area in a suburb experiencing a high rate of vehicle-related crimes might letterbox-drop information about vehicle security.

Each Neighbourhood Watch Area has a committee with an Area Coordinator, Secretary and Treasurer. Some Neighbourhood Watch Areas also have a Newsletter Editor.

Each Neighbourhood Watch Area holds regular public meetings throughout the year and invites community members to discuss local crime issues and crime prevention initiatives.

South Australia Police and the Neighbourhood Watch Volunteers Association of SA Inc. deliver the program in partnership.
