Mobile phone theft is a big problem in Australia.
Phones are attractive to thieves because they are valuable, small, easily concealed and easy to resell. Stolen phones are often sold online through sites such as Gumtree or eBay – and there is always a market for them.
It doesn’t matter if your phone isn’t brand new – it’s still valuable.
Phones are also stolen to access your personal data because they often contain banking apps, passwords and other sensitive information. Just like a wallet or purse, the content on your phone is valuable. A stolen phone can put you at risk of identity theft, fraud or scams.
Most phone theft occurs in public places, particularly places that are really busy, so you need to stay vigilant.
We often keep our phones easily accessible because we use them all the time. Do you carry your phone in your back pocket or in an open bag? When you sit down at a cafĂ©, do you put your phone on the table so you don’t miss texts, notifications or phone calls? If you do, your phone is there for the taking.
SAPOL’s Facebook page shared the story of an 87-year-old woman who had her phone stolen from her shopping trolley at Elizabeth Shopping Centre. “The man laughed and waved as he walked off with her phone,” the post said.
Fortunately, there are some easy ways to make your phone and its contents safer and more secure.
