Today, 15 new police officers graduate from the South Australia Police (SAPOL) academy.
Among the 15 graduates are a forensic biology university student, a cricket enthusiast building a new life in Australia, and an avid camping adventurer.
Ranging in age from 19 to 35, the twelve men and three women bring various life experience and education to policing, including from the security, hospitality, military, government, trades and service industries, plus as a Police Security Officer.
Course 84’s members are also culturally and linguistically diverse, with one graduate born in India. These graduates will be stationed to metropolitan and regional postings, including Murray Bridge, Port Augusta, Port Pirie and Whyalla.
Mrunal, 30, had worked as a hospital security officer at Whyalla Hospital before deciding to pursue a career in policing. He believes his love for sports, especially cricket will help his policing career.
“In my spare time, I play competitive cricket for a local club, which helped me to be a team player." Mrunal said.
“My course has helped me every time I faced challenges, especially since I come from a non-English speaking background." Mrunal’s resilience will prove valuable in keeping the community safe.
Before joining SAPOL, Abigail, 22, was working her way through university studying forensic biology. Abigail was attracted to policing because of the variety of job opportunities that exist within the organisation, and the potential to use her previous education.
“I would like to work in crime scene investigation or forensic response.” Abigail said.
Tarrant, 30, enjoys the challenge of camping in nature around Australia, but is now looking forward to the challenges of keeping the community safe, and taking on the personal responsibility of policing.
“The course has changed my outlook on the weight of policing and level of expectation from both members of the public and SAPOL itself. I have become more aware of my actions and how they affect my surroundings.” Tarrant said.
Tarrant reflected his time at the academy positively, remembering the strong bonds he built.
“The course, since the beginning, has become a tight-knit group that as supporting one another with every aspect of training life. We have provided study groups, physical fitness groups and passed experiences and knowledge to each other.” Tarrant said.
