Course 83’s Lucky 13 graduate today

17 Sep 2025 1:01pm

A former correctional officer, a McDonalds manager, a greenskeeper and a carpenter are among the 13 new police officers who graduated today from the South Australia Police (SAPOL) academy.

Ranging in age from 19 to 45, the nine men and four women bring various experience to policing, including from the security, retail and construction industries, plus as a Police Security Officer.

Course 83’s members are also culturally and linguistically diverse, with graduates born in China, Cyprus, Bosnia and Italy.
Nicole, 45, had worked as a signwriter for 30 years before deciding to make a change and join the police.

“Not having attended school for so long was a challenge being an older applicant.  Once I had gone on outphase though, it all started to come together, and I started seeing significant improvement," Nicole said.

“Outphase was amazing.  Every officer I worked with was considerate, helpful and had values that align with mine."  And, as a keen goalkeeper for her local hockey club, nothing gets past her!

Before joining SAPOL, Ella, 23, competed as an elite cyclist and won a gold medal at the Junior World Track Cycling Championships.

“I believe my cycling helped me to build resilience and taught me teamwork and dedication.  These traits helped me during my time at the academy and will continue to help me after my graduation,” Ella said.

Kevin, 23, believes his background in security and passion for the gym and fitness have helped set him up for a career in policing.

“Being a security guard taught me a lot about street craft and being able to read people’s demeanour.  A love of sport has also built a good foundation to be a fit and healthy police officer,” Kevin said.

“My favourite experience was at Echunga, when everyone was together, working as a team and encouraging each other.”
Course 83 members will be stationed to metropolitan and regional postings, including Murray Bridge and Port Pirie.

SAPOL is currently recruiting and is keen to hear from people interested in an inspiring career with unmatched experiences and rewards.
