Respect the river this summer

10 Nov 2025 8:31am

It’s a busy time in the Riverland with South Australia Police’s Water Operations in Barmera for Bushy’s Triathlon yesterday and today’s start of the Mighty River Run.

It’s expected to be a busy summer on the water and Officer in Charge of Murray Mallee Region, Superintendent Cindy Healey is asking everyone to have respect for the river and each other.

“Water Operations and Marine Safety Officers will be on the river patrolling for the next few months as people start to enjoy everything the river has to offer,” Superintendent Healey said.

“Police will make sure everyone is acting responsibly while on the water, by detecting breaches of the Harbours and Navigation Act.”

SAPOL is part of the River Muray Safety Working Group, led by Royal Life Saving Society – Australia who is promoting their Respect the River – Make the Right Call campaign. You’ll also see their posters and campaign messaging on social media and at river events.

“This messaging is a great opportunity to remind people of the simple things they can do to protect themselves and their families whilst enjoying the river,” Superintendent Healey said.

“It may have been a while since you’ve driven a boat, so check the rules of the river before you go out and make sure you have the correct safety equipment on board.

“Police will be conducting safety equipment checks and random alcohol and drug testing of boat operators, observers and skiers, because as on land, a blood alcohol limit of 0.05 applies.”

Since 1 January 2025, older standard lifejackets have no longer been acceptable to use, and jackets must now meet the AS 4758 standard.

River Murray Safety Working Group is reminding everyone to:

  • Know the conditions - look out for changing river flows and hidden hazards
  • Avoid alcohol around water
  • Always wear a lifejacket when boating, fishing or kayaking
  • Don’t overestimate your swimming abilities
  • Always supervise children around water
  • Never go alone. Always plan to swim, boat, paddle or fish with someone else
  • Make safe choices so everyone can enjoy the water and return home safely.
