A drink driver on a provisional licence has been caught travelling more than 40 km/h above the speed limit near Whyalla over the weekend.

About 6.25pm on Saturday 15 August, police detected a Mercedes sedan travelling at 151 km/h in a 110 km/h zone on the Lincoln Highway at Middleback Range.

The driver underwent a breath test and returned a positive reading of 0.131, almost three times the legal limit.

The 63-year-old Port Lincoln man was reported for drink driving, exceeding the speed limit and breaching the conditions of his licence.

He was issued with an immediate six-month loss of licence and his vehicle was impounded for 28 days.
