Local towns in campaign spotlight

What does the Big Lobster have to do with saving lives?

Well, it features in a SAPOL campaign aiming to help drivers fight fatigue as they prepare to get behind the wheel for holiday road trips.

The ‘Our Town Could Save Your Life’ campaign encourages motorists to take regular breaks by highlighting key locations to have a rest, including bakeries and tourist attractions, such as the Big Lobster, in small towns.

Research conducted specifically for this campaign found that the general message of ‘don’t drive tired,’ wasn’t enough, as busy lifestyles create a sense of always being tired, making it seem unavoidable.

Instead, this campaign takes the approach of encouraging road users to take a  break from driving every two hours by parking, stretching your legs, and seeing the local sights for a short period of time.

A short rest break during a long term trip can then result in a safer journey.

Keep an eye out in regional locations for billboards that will promote different fatigue-fighting things to do in various towns.

Radio spots and social media content will also roll out from December 14.
