Step-by-step application process

Step 1:  Complete the application Form

Download and complete the PD303 - Application for a Firearms Licence form.

*NOTE: If you are using an internet browser like Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, you need to configure your browser to open this online form using Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat.

Step 2: Prepare your identification

You must provide 100 points of original identification. View acceptable ID documents

Step 3: Pay the application fee

An application fee equivalent to a 1-year licence is required. This fee is non-refundable, even if your application is unsuccessful. View the current fees for firearms licences.

Step 4: Submit your application

Take the following to your local police station:

  • Completed application PD303 form
  • 100 points of original ID (plus photocopies of your identification for certification)
  • Application fee

Step 5: Receive an approval letter

If your application is accepted, you’ll receive a letter advising:

  • Whether further justification is needed
  • What training is required
  • Who to contact to arrange training

Step 6: Complete firearms safety training

You must complete the required training course(s) listed in your approval letter.
Note: TAFE SA requires a functional level of English for training and assessments.

Eligibility requirements

To apply, you must:

  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Be usually resident in South Australia
  • Be a fit and proper person.  
  • Have a genuine reason for owning a firearm (e.g., sport shooting, hunting, occupational use)
