Police target irresponsible drivers on the Limestone Coast

Police have released the results of a five-day road safety operation in the State's South East.

Members from the Limestone Coast Region, Road Policing and State Traffic Enforcement Sections teamed up with National Parks and Wildlife Service last weekend in a joint operation focusing on road safety around Beachport, Robe, Millicent and Kingston SE.

The operation ran from Friday 30 October to Tuesday 3 November, coinciding with the Victorian public holiday which sees an influx of motorists from across the border into the Limestone Coast region.

Police are aware that some visitors bring heavily modified off-road vehicles for use in the sand dunes and on beaches.

Unfortunately, many off-road enthusiasts do not adhere to the road rules, nor stay on the approved off-road tracks.

The operation targeted speeding, drink and drug driving, and reckless driving behaviour on roads and within coastal dune areas.
During the operation, police detected one drink driver and ten drug drivers, issued 113 expiation notices for a range of traffic offences, and issued 35 defect notices. Ten drivers were also issued with immediate losses of licence.
Local residents reportedly appreciated the efforts of police and National Parks and Wildlife Service to curb antisocial behaviour and focusing on community and road safety.
While police were pleased with the overall results of the operation and the continued partnership with National Parks and Wildlife Service, it is disappointing that some motorists still choose to drive while affected by alcohol or drugs, speed, or drive irresponsibly in environmentally sensitive areas.
