Port Augusta residents urged to 'lock up'

16 Jun 2026 2:26pm

Port Augusta police are urging the community to review the security of their homes after a spate of recent break-ins.

Police have received 34 reports of break-ins in the Port Augusta area this month with most of these incidents occurring during hours of darkness.

Of note, on most occasions homes have been entered through unlocked doors and windows.

Members of the public are urged to Protect What Matters and visit SAPOL - Home security habits to reduce the opportunity for thieves to gain entry into your home.

Please consider the following tips:

  • Ensure appropriated keyed locks are fitted to all doors and windows
  • Be sure to lock all doors and windows, gates, garages and sheds when not in use.
  • House keys, car keys and garage remotes should be kept in a safe location – not left in plain sight.
  • Install an alarm system.
  • Don’t leave valuables in obvious places.

Police urge residents to report any suspicious behaviour around homes and cars at the time it is occurring via the police attendance line on 131 444.

Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at www.crimestopperssa.com.au or on 1800 333 000.
