Do I need a permit

In South Australia, certain firearm-related activities require a permit in addition to a firearms licence. Permits are issued by the SAPOL Firearms Branch and are essential for specific uses, events, or circumstances involving firearms, firearm parts, or ammunition.

Common situations that require a permit

You may need a permit if you are:

Visiting South Australia from overseas

Apply for an International Visitors Permit (IVP) if you plan to possess or use firearms for:

  • Competitive shooting
  • Hunting
  • Ceremonial or commemorative events
  • Personal security services for dignitaries
  • Historical re-enactments
  • Firearm testing or demonstrating firearms for a government department, agency or instrumentality.
Participating in film, TV, or theatre productions

Apply for a Foreign Theatrical Armourer (FTA) permit to use firearms in media productions. You must be authorised for the same category of firearm in your home jurisdiction.

Apply for a Foreign Firearms Dealer (FFD) permit if you intend to:

  • Display, sell, or purchase firearms, parts, or ammunition
  • Use firearms at the event

You can apply for a permit to possess firearms for the purpose of carrying on the business of refurbishing firearms, such as engraving firearm stocks or bluing of firearms.

You must complete the RF1740 application form and include the type of business you carry out that requires a permit.

You must make and provide the Registrar with records in relation to your possession of a firearm.
