Southern District police have carried out a targeted day of action at Westfield Marion, a Declared Shopping Precinct.
On Friday 29 May, officers from Sturt response team and Operation Measure, with assistance from Police Dog Operations Unit, conducted proactive patrols within the shopping centre. Police worked alongside centre security and loss prevention staff to target theft, drug-related offending and anti-social behaviour.
As a result of the operation, a number of people were arrested or reported for a range of offences including shop theft, breach of bail, possession of weapons, drug offences, disorderly behaviour and property damage. Several offenders were also wanted for outstanding matters at the time of their apprehension.
Of note, A 22-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly stealing about $200 worth of items from a store while in possession of a six inch dry wall saw. She was granted bail to attend court at a later date.
In another incident, a 37-year-old man was seen on CCTV causing damage to an electronic advertising machine. He was arrested and charged with property damage, disorderly behaviour and wanted for other previous theft and damage matters. He was refused bail and attended the Christies Beach Magistrates Court the next day.
Police say the results highlight the effectiveness of coordinated operations involving uniform and plain clothes officers working closely with retail partners.
Southern District police will continue to conduct similar co-ordinated with centre management to deter criminal activity and provide a safe environment for shoppers, retailers and staff.
