PSO Program 9 hits the frontline

20 Feb 2026 2:32pm

Today, South Australia Police (SAPOL) celebrate the graduation of 11 new Police Security Officers, marking the successful completion of Police Security Officer Qualifying Program 9 (PSOQP9).

The graduation marks the conclusion of their training which has prepared the group to move into operational roles supporting frontline policing across South Australia, protecting State Government buildings, assets, and citizens.

The cohort includes members aged 18 to 41, bringing a diverse range of professional and life experience into SAPOL. Prior to joining, graduates worked in industries including civil construction, mining and earthmoving, hospitality, retail, trades and fitness.

The cohort also reflects a rich cultural and linguistic diversity, with graduates originating from countries including England and Italy, and others bringing heritage connections to Croatia, Macedonia and Korea.

Graduating member Bailey said the variety of the role and the opportunity to contribute to community safety motivated him to join SAPOL.

“Knowing that I will be making a difference, no matter how big or small, and the variety of the work that PSO’s do, in conjunction with the new expansion of duties made the role attractive,” he said.

Bailey said returning to structured study was one of the most challenging parts of the program.

“I found the written exams to be difficult, especially at the start of the course, having been out of school for a few years,” he said.

“The mentors and the other members of the course all helped me during our study sessions, and I ended up getting some really good results.”

Bailey recalls fondly on his time at the Academy, highlighting the strong bond that formed among the entire cohort.

“My most memorable experience of the academy would have been the driver training and the time that I spent with my course mates.

“The three days we spent driving around taught me a lot and was so fun.”

Graduating member Kasey said her background in customer-facing retail roles helped prepare her for the communication and engagement required of a PSO.

“I’ve always loved talking to people and helping in any way I can,” she said.

“A family member of mine is in mainstream police and has been for many years. I really look up to them.

“They were eager for me to apply, always talking about how rewarding the career is even through its challenges.”

Throughout the course, recruits completed training in legislation, communication, defensive tactics, first aid, scenario-based policing and physical fitness, as well as examinations and assessments designed to test their decision-making under pressure.

Kasey said the importance of teamwork and support throughout the program, particularly during demanding periods of training.

“Everyone sent uplifting messages in our group chat, we quizzed each other before exams and talked through scenarios together,” she said.

Both graduates said the course challenged them to step outside their comfort zones, while also reinforcing the importance of professionalism, resilience and teamwork.

“The instructors and mentors for all the lessons we’ve had are so passionate and approachable,” Kasey said.

Bailey highlighted the importance of “embracing the difficult moments.”

“My top tip is to just be open and be ready. It doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 30, there will be new experiences and things that challenge you.”

Today’s PSO graduates will be deployed across operational areas within the Police Security Services Branch (PSSB), where they will support police operations, manage security at key locations and engage with the community.

SAPOL is actively recruiting Police Security Officers and encourages applications from people who are committed to supporting the safety and security of South Australians.
