Operation safe hills catches thousands speeding

The operation was conducted on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays between 3 October 2025 and 26 April 2026 and found 10,115 motorists speeding in the Hills Fleurieu Region and the hills areas within the Barossa Region, Northern, Eastern and Southern Districts.

Of the 10,115 motorists detected:

• 9,869 drivers or riders were detected speeding up to 29km/h over the limit.
• 204 drivers or riders were detected speeding between 30 and 44km/h over the limit.
• 42 drivers or riders were detected speeding 45km/h or more over the limit.
  • Eight of these drivers/riders were charged with driving in a manner dangerous to the public.

Alarmingly, 450 were riding motorcycles (4%) with:

• 405 were speeding up to 29km/h over the limit.
• 29 detected speeding between 30 and 44km/h over the limit.
• 16 detected speeding 45km/h or more over the limit.

During Operation Safe Hills there were 11 lives lost and 88 serious injuries within the Hills Fleurieu Region and hills environments. Five (45%) of the lives lost and 25 (28%) of serious injuries were motorcyclists.

As the figures show, motorcycle riders are overrepresented in the statistics, particularly fatal collisions and serious injuries.
