Don’t let scamming Grinches steal your Christmas

28 Nov 2025 8:01am

The Christmas season is here, pageant marched, fairy lights twinkling, and wreaths hung across South Australia. People are making their shopping lists and often looking for bargains.

Unfortunately, while shoppers are spreading cheer, scammers are plotting to steal it.

Acting Sergeant Max Allison from SAPOL’s Cybercrime Training and Prevention Section warns shoppers to be vigilant gift cards tampering scams this Christmas.

“Gift cards are a popular present for all ages, but they’re also a prime target for tampering scams,” Acting Sergeant Allison said.

“Gift card tampering scams are devised by scammers who steal funds from gift cards before the recipient can even use it.”

Fraudsters copy or alter gift card numbers while cards are still on display in stores. Once the card is purchased and activated, they drain the funds before the recipient can use it.

“Shoppers could unknowingly buy a compromised card,” Acting Sergeant Allison said.

“These scams turn Christmas joy into frustration, but there are simple steps to protect yourself.”

SAPOL’s Six Tips to Avoid Gift Card Scams

  1. Check for tampering: Look for scratched or altered numbers.
  2. Verify details: Ensure serial numbers and values match inside and outside the packaging.
  3. Inspect packaging: Damage near seals or glue may indicate interference.
  4. Watch for fake barcodes: Stickers over original codes are a red flag.
  5. Buy securely: Choose cards stored behind the register, not on open racks.
  6. Keep proof: Save your receipt and activation slip.

If you’ve been scammed, report it at your nearest police station or online at www.cyber.gov.au/report-and-recover.
