Road Safety Centre Relocation Project

As of 6 May 2024 work will commence on the mock roadway located in Bonython Park to accommodate the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital build. As a result SAPOL’s Road Safety Centre will be unable to accommodate road safety sessions at the Centre that include the use of the mock roadway. SAPOL’s road safety educators will still be providing road safety sessions that enhance the awareness, knowledge and skills of all road users through lifelong learning across the state and are available to attend off site locations. Work has commenced on the new SAPOL Road Safety Centre at West Beach and it is anticipated that the new centre will be operating from August 2024.

The mock roadway will still be available for public use, however power will be required to be switched off whilst the builders for the new hospital carry out work in the area.

The Road Safety Centre conducts more than 1,000 road safety sessions, displays and events per year, engaging with approximately 95,000 people from across the state each year. To book a SAPOL road safety education program phone 8207 6923 or email SAPOL.RoadSafetySection@police.sa.gov.au.

South Australia Police’s Road Safety Centre, currently located at Thebarton Barracks, will be relocating to West Beach in 2024.

The South Australian Government recently unveiled an architect’s concept of what the new facility will look like. The drawing is not finalised but is an indicator of what is planned for the site.

Road Safety Centre Relocation Project

The existing Road Safety Centre has operated from Thebarton Police Barracks since 2013, but has played an important role in the education and development of more than 500,000 young people for over 40 years. The new facility, which will form part of the West Beach Parks precinct on Military Road, will allow the Centre to open up to the wider community and help continue to disseminate vital road safety messaging.

The Thebarton Barracks Relocation Project team, in conjunction with West Beach Parks, is working closely with Road Safety Section staff in designing the new facility to ensure it is fit for purpose. It is anticipated that the new facility will be completed mid-2024.

Whilst the exact moving date is not yet confirmed, disruptions during relocation will be kept to a minimum to allow a smooth continuation of the Centre’s services.

Bookings for sessions at the current Road Safety Centre in Thebarton and for off-site sessions, including sessions in regional areas, continue to be available. The mock roadway will also continue to be open for business as usual until further notice. Bookings from mid-2024 at the new location can be made now.
