Prevent bicycle and personal mobility device theft

Bicycle and personal mobility device (PMD) theft can be frustrating and expensive but protecting your gear is easier than you think. Follow these four simple steps to safeguard your property and stay one step ahead of thieves.

Lock

  • Use high-quality locks resistant to cutting.
  • Use two different types of locks.
  • Never leave your bike or PMD unattended.
  • Store in a locked shed or inside your house.

Secure

  • Always lock your bike/PMD to a fixed, sturdy object.
  • Avoid locking to insecure objects.
  • Secure in well-lit, highly visible locations.

Protect

  • Mark you bike/PMD using:
    • engraving tools
    • UV pens
    • Microdots
  • Mark using driver’s licence number and ‘S’ for South Australia
  • Mark accessories like helmets, lights, pumps, etc
  • Consider audible alarms or GPS trackers.
  • Consider removing the battery.

Record

  • Register you bike/PMD with a registry app.
  • Record serial number, make, model and unique features.
  • Take photographs showing marking and accessories.
  • Save records to assist in identification and recovery.
