Register a firearm

Before you can legally possess a firearm in South Australia you must hold a current firearms licence and follow the steps below to acquire and register the firearm.

Step-by-step registration process

Step 1- Apply for a permit to acquire

Complete the PD306 – Application for a Permit to Acquire a Firearm form. You’ll need to provide:

  • Your personal details.
  • Details of the current firearm owner.
  • Details of the firearm
  • A genuine reason and need to acquire the firearm.

Note - The Registrar may refuse your application if your need can be met by a firearm already in your possession. Refer to Section 23(3)(d) of the Firearms Act 2015.

Step 2: Submit your application

Submit your completed PD306 application to Firearms Branch

  • By post to The Registrar Firearms Branch, SAPOL PO Box 1539 Adelaide 5001
  • Via your local police station.

The application is forwarded to the SAPOL Firearms Branch.

Step 3: Application assessment

  • Your application is reviewed by the Firearms Branch.
  • All applications for a permit will not be granted until at least 28 days have elapsed from the date of the application unless you already own a registered firearm of the same category as the firearm to which the application relates.

Step 4: Receive approval

If your application for a permit is approved, SAPOL returns the PD 306 form with approval details.

Step 5: Transfer the firearm

The firearm must be transferred from the current owner to you. This transfer must be witnessed by a prescribed person, such as:

  • Police officer
  • Licensed firearms dealer
  • Authorised officer of a firearms club
  • Public Service employee

The witness must complete the “Witness to Transfer” section on the PD306 form.

Step 6: Register the fireman

Within 14 days of taking possession of the firearm, you must visit your local police station with:

  • The firearm
  • The completed, authorised and witnessed application form PD306
  • Payment for the registration fee.

Step 7: Receive registration certificate

Once processed, SAPOL will issue a Certificate of Registration for your firearm
