If you have an unwanted, unregistered, or illegal firearm, you can surrender it safely and legally under the General Firearms Amnesty provided by the Firearms Act 2015. This process helps remove firearms from circulation and promotes community safety.
How to dispose of a firearm
Step 1: Prepare the firearm
- Ensure the firearm is unloaded.
- Remove the bolt or other components to render it safe.
- Place the firearm in a gun bag or wrap it in a blanket to avoid public alarm.
- Gel blasters must have batteries and accessories removed.
Step 2: Choose a disposal location
You can surrender firearms at:
- Any South Australia Police station
- A participating licensed firearms dealer
Find a Dealer Near You
Step 3: Complete the required forms
- At a Police Station: Fill out PD315 Surrender Notice
- At a Dealer: Fill out PD315A Surrender Notice
- You will receive a receipt confirming the surrender
Optional: Registering the firearm instead of disposal
If you wish to register the firearm rather than dispose of it:
You must hold a valid South Australian firearms licence.
Attend a participating dealer (not a police station).

The dealer will hold the firearm during the registration process.
SAPOL does not charge registration fees, but dealer fees may apply.
