School's out! But road safety lesson continues

Police are reminding motorists to be vigilant around school zones today as students head home for Summer holidays.

Considered some of the most vulnerable road users, police say children will be excited to finish school today and may be prone to erratic or unpredictable behaviours near the road. Their smaller stature also makes them more difficult to see from a vehicle.

Superintendent Paul Bahr, LSA Commander Eyre and Western says many schools are closing earlier today and children walking or riding bikes and scooters will be eager to get home to start the holidays.

"When you're collecting children, make sure you're not parking in ‘no standing’ zones or marked yellow lined areas, " Supt Bahr said.

"Please adhere to signed 25km/ph zones to ensure the safety of our children ."

Supt Bahr also asks motorists to show courtesy and responsibility around school buses.

"School buses taking children to and from school often have issues with speeding motorists," he said.

"Please slow down to allow children to get on and off the bus safely.

Ensure everyone is wearing a seat belt, don’t drive if you have been consuming alcohol or drugs and take extra care not to be distracted by mobile phones or other passengers."

Supt Bahr urged families heading off on holidays to take regular rest breaks, to not overtake unless safe to do so and to plan activities to amuse children on long trips to prevent driver distraction.
