Check your home security

16 May 2019 9:27am

Police receive a number of reports each week about attempted break-ins on homes and businesses.

In many instances house break-ins are crimes of opportunity with entry gained through an open or unlocked door or window.

Greatly reduce your risk of becoming a victim of burglary by implementing the following measures to improve the security of your property:

  • Even if you’re at home, be aware of your home security and ensure doors and windows are secured, particularly in areas that are unoccupied.
  • Before you hire a professional house cleaner or gardener, check all references thoroughly.
  • Secure your home when you leave by locking all doors and windows.  Remove keys from internal doors and windows when you are not at home.
  • Keep cash, keys and valuables out of sight and out of easy reach.
  • Don’t leave a house key under the door mat or a pot plant, in the letterbox or in other obvious places.
  • Ensure your house/unit number is clearly visible so it can be located quickly in an emergency.
  • If you think someone has made an attempt to break into to your property, it is important that you report it to local police.

This helps police build a picture of criminal activity in the area and allows police to target patrols.

It’s also a good idea to let your neighbours know if you’ve experienced an attempted break-in, so everyone can check their security and be alert to any suspicious activity in the area.
