Leave would-be thieves in the cold

20 Jun 2019 10:45am

With the onset of cooler weather, it’s the perfect time to audit your winter home security.

Darker conditions in the evening can provide thieves with increased opportunities to break in to properties or steal items left out in yards and carports

As you hurry indoors on a cold evening, it’s easy to overlook a window left open or sporting equipment or tools left out.

Unfortunately, thieves won’t overlook these opportunities, so now’s the time to re-assess your home security. Consider these crime prevention tips to keep your home secure this winter:

  • If you can, invest in exterior motion-sensor lights for outside entry points such as front and back doors and windows – that way you will be alerted to any movement in front of your house or the back garden and it may be enough of a deterrent to put off thieves.
  • Double check doors and windows are locked before you leave the house or settle in for the night. It sounds obvious, but it’s surprising how often it’s not done.
  • If you get home when it’s dark or you’re travelling away, install timer lights to automatically come on as it gets dark. This can help create the impression that someone is home. If you do set light timers, remember to close the curtains before you leave, to ensure no one can see in when the lights come on.
  • Cut back shrubs and ensure the entrance to the home is visible from the street. This eliminates hiding spots.
  • Lock away outdoor furniture door or ladders that could be used to climb into upper windows.
  • Lock away sports equipment, including bicycles, in secure garages or sheds, out of sight of windows.
  • A monitored alarm system is an added layer of security that can provide peace of mind. An alarm sounding on its own may be ignored by passers-by and neighbours, but a monitored system will ensure a prompt response.

If you witness any unusual behaviour in your area, report it to Police on 131 444.
