War medals back with family after 14 months

30 Oct 2020 7:45pm

Limestone Coast Police, with the grateful assistance of Mount Gambier RSL, have been able to return war medals handed into the station over a year ago.

Back in August 2019, a member of the public handed in an Australian Defence Medal, an Australian Active Service Medal 1945-1975, an Australian Service Medal 1945-1975 and a Pingat Jasa Malaysia Medal.

Police made numerous enquiries to identify the owner but were unsuccessful. They then reached out to their local RSL for help and after 14 months, the RSL were happy to advise they had identified the veteran's next of kin. Arrangements have been made to have them returned to the family interstate.

Senior Sergeant Natasha Elliott said, "We are honoured that in conjunction with the Mount Gambier RSL, Limestone Coast police have been able to see these lost medals returned to the family of the veteran".
