Police detect drink and drug drivers as part of overnight operation

21 Sep 2019 9:14am

Police last night conducted an alcohol and drug testing operation as part of Operation Stop Drink Drug Drive.

Between 7pm on Friday 20 September and 3.30am this morning, police tested just over 2500 drivers for alcohol and almost 140 for drugs state-wide.

A total of 24 drivers returned blood alcohol readings over the legal limit with an additional 24 returning positive tests to either cannabis or methamphetamine. Police also issued 16 drivers with an immediate loss of licence and 19 vehicles were impounded.

The highest reading was a ‘P’ plate driver who returned an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.201 and also tested positive to methamphetamine (https://www.police.sa.gov.au/sa-police-news-assets/traffic/p-plater-caught-drink-and-drug-driving-at-mile-end#.XYVf7SgzZEY).

Police will continue to conduct operations to not only educate road users as the dangers and risks of driving while under the influence but to also detect those drivers who make poor and irresponsible decisions to get behind the wheel while they are effected by alcohol and/or drugs.
