Update: Bodies retrieved from Wilpena

12 Aug 2019 4:51pm

The bodies of two men have been retrieved at Wilpena Pound, in the Flinders Ranges following a climbing accident over the weekend.

The incident was brought to the attention of emergency services about 1.15pm on Sunday 11 August.

Patrols and emergency services made their way to the location at the Moonarie Climbing Area, which is extremely remote and in inaccessible terrain.

Sadly, a 62-year-old man from Norwood and a 44-year-old man from Fairview Park were located deceased at the scene.

STAR (Special Tasks and Rescue) Operations officers from Adelaide flew to the region this morning, where they assisted in the recovery by local patrols and SES volunteers.

Late this afternoon the bodies of both men were winched aboard the PolAir helicopter.  They will be then flown to Adelaide via the Police Wing Aircraft for a post mortem examination.

Police and CIB detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the men's deaths and will prepare a report for the coroner.

The families of the deceased have requested privacy at this time.
