A man has been arrested and charged following an attempt aggravated robbery at Renmark yesterday.
About 2.20pm on Wednesday 21 July a man driving a silver 1990 Ford Corsair attended a Renmark Avenue service station and filled the car with unleaded petrol. He then went inside, armed with a machete, and threatened the attendant, demanding money.
The attendant refused to hand over any money and chased the suspect out of the store with a chair. Thankfully the attendant was not physically injured.
The suspect fled the scene in the car, which was later found dumped at a Renmark North property. Police seized the car for forensic examination.
Just before 10pm (Wednesday 21 July) patrols and detectives from Berri and Renmark attended a home in Paringa to conduct a search. Police searched the property not finding anything and were just about to leave when they noticed that the man-hole cover seemed to be upside-down.
Police got up in the roof space and located the 28-year-old suspect hiding. He was arrested and charged with attempt aggravated robbery, making off without payment, illegal use of motor vehicle and failing to comply with emergency management direction.
He was refused bail and will appear in the Berri Magistrates Court today.
