A family’s road trauma told in SA Police first podcast

09 Jun 2019 10:00am

South Australia Police today (9 June) released its first podcast, using the medium to tell the tragic story of the death of Nicholas Holbrook, who died in a road crash on West Lakes Boulevard in 2009.

The 18-year-old was in a speeding car that was being driven by his mate Phillip Wright which hit a tree on the evening of 11 June.

Nick later died in the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Phillip plead guilty in 2012 to causing his death by his dangerous driving,

Alongside Nick’s parents, Glynis and Michael Holbrook, he has spoken about the events of that night and what followed in this podcast, which also features witnesses, friends, Triple Zero call audio and police radio transmissions.

Superintendent Bob Gray, the officer in charge of the SA Police Traffic Support Branch, said the podcast was another avenue being accessed by police in a bid to highlight the terrible trauma caused by road crashes.

“We are grateful to all those who participated in this process,” he said. “I urge all South Australians to download this and to consider their own driving behaviour in the light of the lasting impact of road crashes.

“If you have teenage drivers in your family, I would ask you to listen to it together and have a discussion about driver behaviour.

“Every choice has a consequence, with those consequences continuing to echo across the decade since Nick died.”
