Op Hurricane 2 – Vehicle security

Last week Neighbourhood Watch SA in partnership with SA Police launched our five-week campaign to support SAPOL’s Operation Hurricane 2 which is targeting crimes against property.

We kicked off with business security, and this week we are focusing on vehicle security.

Some simple things for you to consider include:

  • Remove all valuables from your unattended vehicle.
  • Don’t store valuables in the boot.
  • Use tamper resistant number plate screws.
  • Keep vehicles overnight in a locked garage.
  • If you have to park on the street, leave it somewhere open with good lighting.
  • Always lock your vehicle even when you leave it for short periods.
  • Remove the ignition key every time you leave the driver’s seat.
  • Don’t leave ownership documents inside the car.
  • Keep your vehicle keys out of sight at home and away from doors and windows.
  • When you go to bed, take your house and vehicle keys with you to the bedroom.

Check out our two Vehicle Security video clips: 'Theft from Vehicles' and 'Keeping Vehicles Secure'.

For more information take a look at our range of motor vehicle security fact sheets on our website:

Each week the campaign on Facebook and our website will provide helpful videos and short tips you can follow for protecting:

  • businesses
  • your vehicle
  • your home
  • your bike
  • building sites.

As Neighbourhood Watch volunteers you can do your part – you don’t have to go to extremes to protect your property. All you need to do is take some simple crime prevention measures to protect your homes, businesses, property and vehicles. You can also report suspicious behaviour immediately by calling the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.

As you may have already seen, SA Police have produced six Neighbourhood Watch SA Weekly Bulletins which are available in the Member Resources section of this site.

Last week we covered Business Security and you can read about this in our previous Operation Hurricane 2 news item, and check out our two Business Security video clips: 'Protect your business from theft' and 'Tips on choosing and installing a CCTV system'.
