Lions Citizen of the Year Award

The annual South Australian Citizen’s Award is presented by The Lions Club of the City of Adelaide and SA Police, and acknowledges a member of the public who performs extraordinary service to assist SA Police in the performance of police duties.

The recipient is selected from nominations made by SA Police employees across South Australia. The award was reinstated in 2003 after several years’ absence. Since then there have been 18 recipients of the award, including Mr Dennis Obst – former President of the Neighbourhood Watch Volunteers Association of SA Inc.

The worthy recipient of the South Australian Citizen’s Award for 2020 is Mr Grant Fensom. Grant was presented with the award by Commissioner of Police Grant Stevens at a ceremony held at the SA Police Club on Wednesday, 21 October 2020.

In August of 2019 Grant assisted Limestone Coast Police in the arrest of an armed offender who had robbed a pharmacy in Port MacDonnell. Grant was nearby while the robbery unfolded and, keeping a cool head, leapt into action. His quick thinking meant police were able to intercept and arrest the offender 15 kilometres from the robbery site without incident.

Grant’s quick thinking and actions on the day provided a great service to SA Police and the community at large. There is absolutely little doubt that his actions greatly influenced the offender’s decision to plead guilty the following day.

Grant’s nomination for this award is a fitting acknowledgement for his courage and consideration during this particular incident. His standing and contributions to the community further enhances his eligibility.

Grant has contributed countless hours in his role as local Country Fire Service Brigade Captain. He takes this commitment to another level by making it a condition of employment in his engineering business that staff must contribute to the community by volunteering with a local service of their choosing. As an added incentive, their volunteer hours can be carried out in paid work time, further highlighting Grant’s strong dedication and community spirit.

Grant’s efforts are commended, and worthy of special recognition with this award.
