As an internal tiering system, SAPOL classifies events as either Local, Special or Major events.
- A local event is an activity at a nominated place (public or private) at which people gather in numbers for some common purpose. It is generally managed by existing local resources only.
- A special event is an event which, because of its size and nature may require extra police resources and/or road closures. Those resources may include additional officers and equipment external to the Local Service Area.
- A major event is an event which presents extraordinary circumstances and demands policing activities with a high level of coordination and command in both planning and managing operations.
When considering holding an event you should contact your local police station and advise them of the following minimal details as soon as you are considering holding an event:
- type of event
- date of event
- information about event including anticipated crowd numbers, security arrangements, special circumstances, liquor licensing etc
- location of event
