General tips- Gates should be as strong as possible, mounted securely and locked with heavy-duty chains and padlocks.
- Keep fences and gates in good repair.
- Use locking posts to obstruct large openings to yards.
- Put up warning signs about watch dogs, alarms and identification marks on all equipment. A good watch dog is one of the best security measures.
- Leave all machinery where it can be seen from a neighbour's house or leave it out of sight behind a hill or tree line.
- Remove keys and disable machinery where possible.
- Do not leave tools in ute trays - if fitted with a toolbox, ensure the box is securely attached to the vehicle as well.
- Secure fuel in both vehicles and at tanks by locking or disabling.
- Storage areas should only have one entrance that should be firmly secured when not in use.
- Mark all livestock, and maintain records, recording purchases, births and deaths. Regularly check stock, especially close to sale days, varying the times.
- Secure the house with sensor lights, locking all doors and windows.
- Overgrown hedges and windbreaks are good hiding spots for thieves so keep these to a minimum.
- Check staff references. Take photos of staff and keep records of employees including descriptions.
- Keep a look out for strangers or unfamiliar vehicles in the area. Where possible, take down any details including license numbers and the details of when and where vehicles were seen as this can be invaluable if a crime occurs.
- Ask hunters of feral animals for references when they request access.
